Simplification, one layer at a time.

Recently there has been a discussion on the topic of “stuff not making you happy” which is a subject I’ve come to whole hardily agree with. I’ve recently been faced with the amount of stuff I currently own when I moved from a 1400 sq house in Minneapolis to a 725 sq apartment in Toronto. My wife and I currently have stuff coming out of our ears, and that’s after doing what we thought was a good job of ridding ourselves of unnecessary junk before we moved. What we brought with us seemed like our most precious stuff, but when faced with a lack of storage room it became junk.

For example, before we left I gutted my book collection down to just the bare essentials, yet just last week I was able to rid myself of a few dozen more titles. Now I’ve got my collection down to only the volumes that are too good to separate myself from, at least until later. See, I’m starting to realize that the easiest way to get rid of all the excess stuff in your life, is to simply get rid of the least valuable things in your life, then after a few weeks, you begin to find that the stuff you thought had a little value to you is now your least valuable. Which ultimately makes it much easier to part with.

Ultimately we’ve taken a journey toward simplification. It will be an on going process, but a rewarding one I’m sure.

Now, all that being said. For Christmas I received the Egg and Muffin toaster combo that I’ve been longing after for so many months. Yes it’s “stuff”, and no I don’t really have the room for it. But holy cow is it awesome.
