Cost vs. Value TorCamp Roundtable Notes

Last night was a TorCamp roundtable discussion on charging clients for the “cost” of what you provide vs. the “value” of the work provided. Judgeing by the notes from the event posted by Jay Goldman it looks like it wasn’t an event to miss if you were interested in the topic.

It’s interesting to me that this roundtable sprung out from what started off as a technical (un)conference. I would love to see conversations break off featuring others who work in the “web” industry but wouldn’t necessarily associate themselves with the “programmer” set. Does discussing a business topic in a technical setting open the doors for conversations outside of the technical realm, or does it put TorCamp on track to lose focus down the road? Is there room under the TorCamp umbrella for a discussion on typography on the web and would anyone leading that conversation feel comfortable breaking bread with a bunch of geeks?*

As someone who is personally more interested in the process of “making things on the web”, than what bias someone brings to the table, I would think inviting outsiders into the fray would ultimately raise the level of conversation for everyone involved. The homework for the next DemoCamp is to find someone else you can bring along. Who should it be?

* Because there’s nothing “geeky” about dedicating your life to the space between letters, right?
